Chapter 17 ]

STEEL DROVE THE Mustang up onto I-635 and dialed his phone. For the second time that day he called Cephas Lawrence. When the man answered, his voice was almost drowned out by the voices of many people.

“Cephas? Where are you?”

“In the airport in . . .” His voice crackled with static. “Bad connection.”

Steel sighed. “I found out that Vivian Darbonne Katrick is involved in this entire affair with the twelfth demon. I paid her a visit tonight. She had a leather pouch with three vials of blood in it.”

Cephas’s voice quickened. “Blood? Listen, Jonathan, Wulf Pharmaceuticals is based in Romania.” More static. “ . . . ties to the old Communist regimes of Eastern Europe. You may be dealing with a biological weapon.”

Steel slowly glanced at the leather pouch on the seat beside him. “Is that his plan? Release a biological agent on Dallas?”

“I doubt it, Jonathan. These demons are subtler.” His voice disappeared for a few seconds. “ . . . turn the vials over to the government.”

“Where it will be tied up for months in analysis. I have to find Josh now! Especially if this blood is toxic!”

Cephas grew quiet on the other end of the line, and Steel heard garbled voices in the background. “I know someone in Dallas . . . working with biologic agents.”

“Good. Can I meet this person tonight?”

“I will make some calls and get back . . .” The line went dead.

Steel had to know how the blood was involved. Josh’s life was in danger. His phone warbled, and he picked it up. But it wasn’t a call. It was an e-mail reply from Josh.

“Trust me. It’s not like I’m going to Transylvania!”

Steel typed in a quick reply. “The judge gave us a week. Let me help.” Steel hit the send button.

Suddenly the phone rang. He jerked in surprise and drew a calming breath as he answered. “Hello?”

“Mr. Steel?” a female voice answered.

“Yes.”

“Meet me at Eastwood mall food court in fifteen minutes. Bring the vial.”

“Who is this?”

“Dr. Lawrence called me.” The line went dead.

Steel pulled back onto the interstate. Cephas didn’t waste any time.
